She Will.

Isabel doesn't just want to be a fan of music, and certainly not just a groupie. No, she is pretty into the idea of playing music herself. Writing, singing and performing it too. Just "like Jem!" of Jem and The Holograms 1980s fame. As a mother who fights the pointless fight of the commercial princess invasion, I'd take Jem over Barbie and the Disney blondes any day. Don't get me wrong, she still loves Snow White and Sleeping Beauty ( I do too!) but I am proud to say that when she dresses up and dances around singing, it's pretty original material, with style and flare all her own. Girls can be princesses, but they should be unique in all the land! Princesses that do stuff and are creative, not just pretty and in need of saving. The other day, we stopped by one of her Daddy's sound checks at a club on Sunset. She was thrilled to"help out" on stage, mostly by dancing and knocking a microphone down. Backstage, the smell of stale beer hung appropriately in the thick air of the small trailer. The walls were rock stickers gone wild. Cool! Sure- she might grow up to be a math teacher, but it's hard not to notice the light in her eyes fire up, as she starts to compose her next song. This one is a song for guitar. Scratch that. Indian tanpora!

She Will Rock You

One of her all time favorites: Queen. And when she feels like it, she knows where to find it, and just how to play it. Her daddy has taught her well. No more CD player in this house, believe it or not. Vinyl it is. And vinyl is just fine by her. The other day we listened to the new Broken Bells album, but Isabel played it at 45 RPM instead of 33 1/3. Sounds awesome! Check it out in the super dark video below.

Three-day pig tails

Girls are funny. Tastes fluctuate, depending on the mood. And when they do, opinions can be very strong. Hair styles and clothing choices are very important. One day, we LOVE this shirt, and THESE shoes...oh, and my hair looks GREAT like this!! The next day..we wouldn't be caught dead in such a look. I admire how Isabel knows what she likes and wants 99% of the time. I think there is nothing cuter than braids and pig tails on little girls. But, that's me. Isabel, often rolls her eyes and just says, "mom...noooo". But then there are the days when she says, "Will you put 5 braids in my hair? No, 6! Oh, and these 8 hair clips too"? Now that she is growing her hair "looong", she has been a little more open to the game "let's play hair salon". The other day she came home from our beloved neighbor's house, with a complete DO, curls and all. She looked like a southern belle on her way to cotillion. She was beaming. Now that almost all her hair can fit into one pony tail...pig tails are definitely in! So in, in fact, that she sometimes doesn't want to take them out. For days. I love watching them devolve and take on a life of their own. I'm amazed how after a long day, they survive a bath, then a good long sleep, a shower the next morning, and still, they carry on. Bring on the snarls and scruff!
